To celebrate the 360th anniversary of the Westphalian Peace, actors imitated a painting, painted in 1889, which showed the rendition of the Wesphalian Peace of 1648, in front of the Town Hall.

Seven percent of people who park their car in Osnabrück use the Mobile-Parking-Service, which was installed at the beginning of May this year. Over 500 people already applied for the Service, which enables the customer to pay only for the minutes he/she uses.

A weak tornado roared over Osnabrück yesterday. Several trees fell down and the fire brigade had to answer 15 emergency times.

After the match against Portugal, the German football team can continue to dream of winning Euro 2008. Over 1500 fans celebrated their team's performence in the city centre; the Neumarkt was closed again and 250 cars paraded through the city. On 25 June, the German team will play against Turkey.

Safes which have been sunk in a canal near Osnabrück were recovered yesterday. All the safes were broken and looked as if they had been discarded after a robbery.

When the German team won against Austria yesterday, the whole city centre was afterwards crowded with fans. The Neumarkt, the place where all buses come and go in the city centre had to be closed for a few hours, due to the fans who took over the area and celebrated, so that no traffic was able to pass. The traffic was diverted.

Young men of the age for military service normally have the choice of joining the army or doing alternative civilian service. But the civilian service also has different choices, and Steffen Bettin from Osnabrück chose to spend a year in Tel Aviv, Israel at an old people’s home to work with people who survived WWII.

Osnabrück’s Red Cross had its open day yesterday. Visitors could learn about how the Red Cross works and were able to watch the volunteers presenting their work, for example the demonstration of how one single trained dog could replace a big human search party.

The Osnabrück Musik- und Kunstschule (Music and Art School) will celebrate its 25th birthday this week. Visitors will be able to listen to different concerts, create their own paper or paint. All courses will be held in the School's garden and everyone who is interested is invited to join in.

Disabled people from the Behinderten Werkstätten in Sutthausen (disabled people’s factory in Sutthausen, an area of Osnabrück) were able to experience the Karmann car factory in a slightly different way. They came to visit the car exhibition and had a painting session afterwards where they were able to paint and draw their favourite cars. They also had dinner with the Karmann workers. The Karmann factory has a close relationship with the disabled people’s factory and even has some car parts made there.

To experience the feeling and for a better understanding of their situation, 14 politicians from different parties in Osnabrück sold the Osnabrück Homeless Newspaper "Abseits". They all reported that it was a very moving experience to be in a situation like that, as they felt the looks and dislike of the passers by.

The Spiel- und Sport Kindergarten (play and sport nursery) in Osnabrück had its open day yesterday. Children and their parents were able to play in the sports hall, which was decorated as a jungle.

After the German team won against Poland in its first match at Euro 2008, Osnabrück fans drove a motorcade through the city centre. The police did not have to intervene and German and Polish fans celebrated together peacefully.

People, wearing black red and gold accessories, hats, shirts and make-up, were seen all over the city yesterday evening. As Poland was playing against Germany at Euro 2008, a lot of pubs and clubs offered free public screens at their location. The result: Germany won the match 2:0 against Poland.

The Inline Skater Night in Osnabrück was a complete success. Over 1000 people came and made the tour around the city centre.

The visit to the professional fire brigade became a tradition for all children from Tschernobyl, who have visited Osnabrück once a year for the last 17 years. The fire brigade and several host families from Osnabrück, enable the children who normally live in Gomel a small village in Belarus where the nuclear reactor catastrophe of 1986 caused a lot of damage, to get away from their every day life and poverty for four weeks.

Yesterday it was exactly one year ago that the Dalai Lama visited Osnabrück. As 1998 was the 350th anniversary of the Westphalian Peace, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was invited to give a speech in front of the Town Hall.

Osnabrück Cathedral is going to get a new façade. As the stonework seems badly worn, the main front façade will get new stones. Therefore the whole front will be covered with scaffolding and the front door will not be accessible until November this year.

Yesterday was Osnabrück’s hottest day this year. With tropical 30˚C a lot of people visited parks and enjoyed the shade under trees.

With ten thousands of visitors the Osnabrück all night flea market throughout the whole city centre was a complete success. The market started on Saturday evening and lasted until Sunday afternoon.
