Council Tax Discounts

The full council tax bill is calculated on the assumption that two or more adults live in the property.

You can get a 25% discount if you are the only adult living in the property. If no-one lived there for a period between 1st April 1993 and 31st March 2004 you can get a 50% discount but from 1st April 2004 only a 10% discount is due.

Part 1 of your Council Tax bill will show if a discount has been given.

Some people are not counted when deciding how many adults are living in the property.

  • Everyone under 18 years old
  • Full time students, student nurses, apprentices and young people on Youth Training Schemes
  • Patients living in hospital or a care home
  • People who are severely mentally impaired
  • 18 and 19 year olds who are at school or have just left school
  • care workers who are paid no more than £44 a week
  • people caring for someone they live with who is disabled and not their partner or child
  • people who belong to a religious community
  • people in prison, unless they are in prison for not paying Council Tax or a fine, or detained elsewhere
  • people staying in some hostels and night shelters
  • members of visiting forces
  • diplomats
  • non-British spouse of a student or non-British dependant of a student

Changes affecting discount

If you are getting a discount you must tell the Council about any changes which may affect the discount.

For example, if you are living alone you must tell the Council if another adult moves in with you. If at any time you believe that the discount on your bill is incorrect, you should write to the Council within 21 days. If you do not tell the Council, you could be fined £50. You can now tell us about any changes using our online form.

Please contact the Customer Services Division if you want to apply for a discount.
