Text Message Reminder Trial
Derby City Council is running a pilot which aims to test the concept of using SMS - text messages - to reduce the cost and improve the quality of service, by reminding customers that their Council Tax is due.
Each month we have to issue Council Tax Reminders to some of our customers who, for one reason or another, have not paid their instalment. Obviously, we’d rather not send any Reminders Notices so we are looking at other ways to contact our customers effectively.
Text messages will only be sent to customers who have given us their mobile phone number to contact them and who we need to send a reminder to.
The pilot is being led by the Customer Services Department.

Direct Debit Online
The City Council's campaign to encourage more people to pay by direct debit is now supported by an online direct debit mandate.
Our secure online mandate lets you send us your direct debit details instantly. Your details are validated as they are entered and then passed straight into the Council Tax system making this the easiest and most efficient way yet of setting up your direct debit. The Online mandate pages guide you quickly and easily through the process.
Direct debits are the most cost-efficient way of collecting council tax and business rates because the council saves money on processing payments and because they reduce the likelihood of people falling into arrears. Customers also benefit by not having to remember to pay, no more queuing to pay, being covered by the direct debit guarantee and of course - it's free!

Automated Telephone Payments
- Council tax payers and business rate payers in Derby can pay their bills over the phone at any time, day or night.
- The Council operates a 24-hour automated telephone payment service to help residents who find it less convenient to pay their bills by any other payment method.
- As well as council tax and business rate payers, residents can also use the new service to pay invoices for things such as football pitch, sports hall or room hire.
- The automated telephone payment service is available by ringing 0845 600 1982. Once connected, customers can be talked through the service in one of three languages: English, Urdu or Punjabi.
- Callers will use their telephone keypad to type in the reference number of the bill they are paying together with details of their debit or credit card.
- The cost of calls to 0845 numbers varies and can be checked with your phone company.
- People who have queries about their bills should still telephone the council service that issued it - the number is shown on the bill.
The Council’s preferred payment method is still by direct debit, as this is the most efficient method to administer and helps to reduce costs. However, the Council wants to offer as many options to pay as possible and payment methods now available include:
- direct debit
- standing order
- by post
- by phone using a debit or credit card
- at any post office
- through the internet
For any additional information on any of the above payment options please telephone 01332 255727, or e-mail at council.tax@derby.gov.uk by fax on 01332 255745, or by post to Council Tax, The Council House, Corporation Street, Derby, DE1 2FS.
