Payments Counter Opening Hours

From 1st August 2009 the opening hours of the cash counter in the Council House in Derby will change. The new opening hours will be 8.30am to 1.30pm.

The changes have been introduced because significantly fewer people are using the cash counter, especially in the afternoons.

There are plenty of alternative ways of paying your Council Bills apart from paying at the cash counter:

Direct debit - This is available for payments of Council Tax, Business Rates, some Invoice payments and Derby Homes rents.

Online - Most Council bills can be paid online. Payment by credit card incurs a fee which covers the cost of the transaction, but there is no charge for paying by debit card.

Automated phone payments - Our automated system is available on 0845 600 1982. This is a 24 hour, seven days a week service. Most bills can be paid using this system. Payment by credit card incurs a fee which covers the cost of the transaction, but there is no charge for paying by debit card.

Cash at any one of over 100 shops and Post Offices throughout the City

Customers paying Council Tax by Paypoint or at a Post Office will need to use a Paypoint card. Customers who do not have a card can be issued with one by contacting us on 0333 200 6900.

Business Rate bills and all other council invoices have a bar code on the invoice which can be used to pay at any Paypoint outlet or Post Office.

Text Message Reminder Trial

Derby City Council is running a pilot which aims to test the concept of using SMS - text messages - to reduce the cost and improve the quality of service, by reminding customers that their Council Tax is due.

Each month we have to issue Council Tax Reminders to some of our customers who, for one reason or another, have not paid their instalment. Obviously, we’d rather not send any Reminders Notices so we are looking at other ways to contact our customers effectively.

Text messages will only be sent to customers who have given us their mobile phone number to contact them and who we need to send a reminder to.

The pilot is being led by the Customer Services Department.

  • The cost of calls to 0845 numbers varies and can be checked with your phone company.
  • People who have queries about their bills should still telephone the council service that issued it - the number is shown on the bill.
