Regeneration and Community

  • Looks after 456 miles of roads in Derby
  • Provides 27,150 street lights
  • Provides 2,492 car parking spaces in 12 car parks
  • Provides free Internet access in all 11 libraries
  • Supports over 9,100 arts events each year - it would take over 25 years to attend all these events at the rate of one a day
  • Funds the Assembly Rooms and Guildhall Theatre, where people watch a wide range of shows and events
  • Looks after almost 100 Local Wildlife Sites and seven Local Nature Reserves, with the help of local partners
  • Co-ordinates a Climate Change Action Programme
  • Keeps open and safe around 45km of footpaths and bridleways
  • Has over 500 Tree Preservation Orders, protecting many of the city's most important trees
  • Controls where developments for dealing with our waste should go and where minerals should be extracted
  • Determines 2,127 planning applications a year, 80% of them within an average time of eight weeks
  • Protects the city's historic and architectural heritage, looking after around 370 Listed Buildings and 15 Conservation Areas

Children and Young People's

  • Provides education for around 38,000 children and young people in eight nurseries, five special schools, 78 primary schools, 13 secondary schoolsand one pupil referral unit
  • Provides free nursery education for around9,000 three and four year olds each year
  • Provides foster care for around 390children and young people each year
  • Places around 30 children for adoptioneach year
  • Has over 11,000 enrolments each year from people looking to extend their knowledge through the Adult Learning Service
  • Received over 8,000 enquiries during the past year relating to childconcerns or support for young people and families
  • Safeguards the future of vulnerable children and young people through the work of the SafeguardingChildren Board in partnership with other agencies

Environmental Services

  • Provides 11,500 school meals a day
  • Runs six leisure centres and two swimming pools
  • Teaches 15,475 people to swim each year
  • Maintains 1,950 acres of green open space
  • Puts up 300 hanging basketsand plants 270,000 flowers each year
  • Cleans city centre streets every nightwhile people are asleep
  • Collected 115,108 tonnes of household waste lastyear, of which 29,251 tonnes was recycled or composted
  • Inspects 1,032food premises a year
  • Deals with over 4,000 requests for pest control eachyear
  • Removes 450 abandoned vehicles each year
  • Deals with over 800 complaintsof noise nuisance
  • Monitors the city's air quality 24 hours a day, sevendays a week

Corporate and Adult Services

  • Helps over 1,900 people live independently in their own homes by providing them with over 19,500 hoursof home care service each week
  • Delivers meals on wheels
  • Supports approximately 1,400 people in long-termresidential and nursing care
  • Provides day centre places for disabled peopleand people with learning disabilities
  • Organises elections so people canhave their say on how the city is run
  • Registers births, deaths, marriagesand civil partnerships
  • Carries out land searches for people moving house
  • Maintains over 700 Councilbuildings
  • Supports voluntary groups by providing them with grants to helpthem in their work
