Derby. A city for all ages

Public spaces in Derby

We care about our city's environment. One of our main objectives is that we have a 'diverse, attractive and healthy environment'.

We make sure that what we do today won't adversely affect generations to come. Our environmental policy PDF Icon -520kb, is key in making sure we achieve this. The policy covers the environmental aspects of all areas of our work, including:
  • the use of energy and transport and the consequences for our climate and health
  • the importance of protecting and enhancing our built environment through planning and conservation services
  • the need for recycling waste or disposal of waste in ways which cause the least harm.

Streets and buildings are also part of our environment, as are the public spaces in and around our city. We are currently working with Derby Cityscape to improve public spaces across Derby, through our Public Realm Strategy.

The environment in Derby is not just about what is around us. It is also about what can affect us as individuals. Pollution control is one of the areas we are responsible for, and we also make sure people are safe when buying from retailers and eating out in the city's many bars and restaurants.

We manage the city centre through its management team - a partnership between the Council and retailers.
