Retail Evidence

This page contains two important reports that form part of the evidence base for the City Council’s Core Strategy. These are the Roger Tym & Partners city-wide Retail Study and the CACI - Derby City Centre Retail Circuit Strategy.

As the Core Strategy progresses more evidence will be added that will help to guide strategy and policy for retailing within the City.

Roger Tym & Partners Retail Study

Derby City Council commissioned Roger Tym & Partners to carry out a Retail Study of Derby. The aim of the study is to assist the Council in the preparation of its Core Strategy and give guidance as to:
  • Future capacity for convenience and comparison floor space throughout the City
  • Any qualitative deficiencies within Derby's shopping centres that should be addressed
  • Potential future retail strategies and policies

This information will be used, along with other evidence, to help form future options for consultation. The study will also be used to help us assess any significant planning applications that may be submitted prior to the Core Strategy being adopted, though applicants will still be expected to provide their own retail assessments when requested.

If you have any comments on the methodology, assumptions or findings of the study, these will be helpful in developing the evidence base for retailing. If you do have comments, it would be particularly helpful if alternative approaches were clearly set out so as to help us determine their merit.

We want to collaborate and consult with the public, operators and their agents to develop a sound retail strategy based on robust evidence. This study provides an excellent starting point to achieving this aim.

A separate volume relating to parts of the Derby Cityscape Masterplan area has also been produced. This was done to provide further guidance for the regeneration of the ‘Eastern Fringes’ of the city centre. This can be downloaded below:

CACI Derby City Centre Retail Strategy

CACI were commissioned to examine the retail market for the City Centre’s retail circuit and to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for a strategy to maximise the future performance of the city centre's retail offer.

While useful evidence for the Core Strategy, the report will be used more widely. The study covers matters that go beyond the remit of the Core Strategy and goes into specific detailed issues. It will be of use to a range of partners in preparing strategies for the future management and development of the city centre.
