Trees in Conservation Areas

Photograph of trees in a conservation areaSome trees in Conservation Areas are covered by Tree Preservation Orders, known as TPOs. Even if they are not covered by a separate TPO, you still normally need to give us six weeks' notice of your intention to do any work to the tree in a Conservation Area, whether this is to prune it or fell it.

This notice is to allow us to decide if the tree should be covered by a TPO. You must not do any work to the tree until we tell you it can be done, or the end of the six week period, which ever is the sooner. The Courts can impose large fines or even imprisonment for anyone doing work to a tree in a Conservation Area without permission.

For some minor works you do not need to give us this notice. In our experience, these exemptions to the law for minor works are somewhat complicated for those who are not familiar with them. Please contact us if you would like to check the details.
