Household Waste Collection

Derby City Council is responsible for collecting and disposing of domestic rubbish in Derby. We have one of the most comprehensive refuse services in the country, and are currently recycling and composting over 43% of the waste generated by householders. Our flagship recycling service is called Recycle for Derby.

Recycle for Derby

Over 90% of the properties in Derby are on our recycling and refuse scheme, Recycle for Derby.  The scheme operates, to most properties, on an alternate week cycle, we collect recycling one week and refuse the next, always ion the same day of the week.

Week 1 Recycling

Week 2 Refuse

  • Black Bin - For items that cannot be recycled above

Current Round Rebalancing

Derby City Council is currently undertaking a round rebalancing exercise that may affect collection of your recycling and refuse, for further information see Round Rebalancing Information

Recycling Calendar

We distribute a calendar every year to residents. There are two calendars depending on which bin round you are on.  The two calendars can be found through the following links. Please check both calendars to make sure you download the correct one for your property.  If you are unsure of your collection day and week contact us on the details above.

Properties not on Recycle for Derby

Properties not on the recycling scheme receive a weekly refuse collection for either their black bin or black sacks and a fortnightly collection of Newspapers and Magazines and Textiles.

How to make your refuse collection easier

  • Please make sure that your bin is placed out for collection by 6.30am at the edge of your property. If you are not able to move your bin through ill health or any other reason please contact us and we will make arrangements for this.
  • Please make sure that your bin is easily identifiable by putting your house number on both on the front and back.
  • If your refuse container is not presented for emptying when the refuse vehicle arrives the vehicle will not return to empty it. However if it has been presented and is missed by the crew please contact us and arrangements will be made for your containers to be emptied.
  • Please do not put additional waste beside the bin for collection as this will not be taken. Items can be taken to Raynesway Recycling Centre.
  • If your bin falls into the refuse vehicle this will be replaced free of charge.
