A
Aerosols
Empty aerosols can be put in the blue recycling bin, taken to any of our recycling sites or Raynesway. Do not puncture or burn the can. Use up the contents before disposing of the empty can.
Asbestos
Up to 3 panels, measuring no more than 6ft x 3ft each can be taken to Raynesway. We cannot take whole garages, outbuildings or other large quantities, please see Yellow pages for contractors who can do this type of work. You must phone Raynesway Recycling Centre on 01332 755482 before taking the Asbestos to Raynesway to make sure the skip is not full or being changed.
Warning
Asbestos can be dangerous if drilled, sawn, scrubbed or sanded as fibres are released and become airborne. These can be inhaled and can cause lung damage. Small whole sheets can be safely handled provided care is taken. If you need to dispose of a large amount of asbestos, or dismantle a shed, garage or other outbuilding, this must be done by a specialist contractor, lists of whom can be found on the internet or consult Yellow Pages.
Aluminium Cans (See Cans)
Aluminium Foil
There is a specialist Aluminium Foil bank at Raynesway. You can also take foil to Alton Metals on Lodge Lane. Foil is recycled in a different process to the cans and therefore has to be collected separately. Aluminium cans can be put in the blue bin but foil and pie dishes should be taken to Raynesway or Alton Metals.

Batteries (Household)
Any shop that sells more than 32 Kilos of Batteries a year now has to take back batteries for recycling, the Direct Gov website has more information.
direct gov battery recycling information . This project starts on 1st February 2010.
Household batteries can also be recycled at Raynesway and at the Council Offices in Roman House, Friargate.
Batteries (Car)
Lead Acid car batteries can be taken for recycling at Raynesway.
Beverage Cartons (Juice Cartons etc)
Beverage Cartons, sometimes called Tetra Packs can be recycled in the and at five recycling sites across the city; Raynesway, Asda Sinfin, Sainsburys Wyvern and Sainsburys Kingsway and Tesco.
Books
Good Quality resaleable books can be recycled at Raynesway and our larger recycling sites. Many Charity Shops also accept books.
Bikes
Bikes can be taken to Raynesway where they will be sent for recycling
Building Waste
Raynesway Recycling Centre does not take large amounts of building material, we will only take the amount you can fit in the boot of a car. We do not collect building rubble on our bulky service or in the wheeled bins. To dispose of your waste you will need to take the waste to a licensed waste site or hire a skip or HIPPO Bag. Details of these can be found in yellow pages, The Thompson Directory and the Phone Book.

Cans
All food and drinks cans (as well as biscuit tins etc) can be recycled in the blue recycling bin, taken to any of our recycling sites or Raynesway
Cardboard
Brown cardboard boxes, corrugated boxes, food boxes like cereal boxes can all be recycled in our , at Raynesway and some of our recycling sites. Pease flatten all boxes.
Carrier Bags
Nearly all supermarkets recycle carrier bags inside the store, we cannot take them on our recycling scheme. Better still purchase a bag for life and reuse it. You can use carrier bags to put your papers in for collection instead of blue bags and save more plastic

Chipboard, Fibreboard and MDF
Chipboard etc can be recycled at Raynesway recycling centre.
Christmas Trees (See Garden Waste)
Real Christmas trees can be recycled in the brown bin or taken to Raynesway for recycling. Some garden centres recycle Christmas trees, contact your local one to find out
Christmas Cards
Each year a number of supermarkets undertake Christmas card recycling, this year Tesco, Marks and Spencer, TK Maxx, Sainsburys and WHSmith are all involved.
Clothes
Clothes can be recycled in our Red Bag Scheme, taken to Raynesway or some of our recycling sites. Charity shops also take in old clothes. There are even Bra Recycling schemes being developed with Macmillian Cancer Research who are encouraging business and groups to collect Bras and help make a donation to help fight Cancer. Coat Hangers
You can now take coat hangers to Tesco's for recycling they have a bank in the entrance to the store in Mickleover.
Coins and Currency
Many Charity shops take old coins in for recycling.
Computer Equipment
All computers taken to Raynesway will be recycled. A number of buinesses also operate in Derby for recycling computers eg PCB plus please look in yellow pages for more firms.

Electrical items
All electrical items taken to Raynesway are now sent for recycling or reuse. We can pick items up on our Bulky waste service but there is a charge for this, and only the large items may be recycled.

Foil
We cannot take aluminium foil in our recycling scheme at the moment but most metal merchants take foil for recycling
Food Waste

Fluorescent Tubes & low energy light bulbs
Fluorescent Tubes, from lighting and sun beds as well as low energy light bulbs can be recycled at Raynesway, there is a skip there specially for them. Do not break the bulbs. Small compact Low Energy Lightbulbs can be recycled in the new banks at the larger Sainsburys' stores at Wyvern, Kingsway and Osmaston Park Road. These banks only take the small bulbs not the full tubes
Fridges & Freezers
The Council offers a free fridge/freezer collection service as part of the bulky waste service, residents can also take there fridges and freezers to Raynesway for recycling
Furniture and Carpets
Some Charity Shops recycle furniture and carpets. eg Derby Furniture project 291121 and BETEL 758887, and the British Heart Foundation Tel 0844 499 4157. Furniture can be taken to Raynesway for disposal or recycling and we can take the items for disposal on our Bulky Waste Service.

Green Garden Waste
Green Garden Waste can be put in the Brown Bin, taken to Raynesway or Home Composted. We do not want soil, stones and very large branches and tree trunks in the brown bin.
Gas Bottles
Gas bottles should be returned to the shop where they were purchased from, If you can't return them they should be taken to Raynesway for recycling or safe disposal.
Glass (Bottles and Jars)
Any glass bottles and Jars can be recycled in blue recycling bin, taken to any of our recycling sites or Raynesway. We collect all colours of glass (red can go in the brown bank and blue in the green bank). No other glass or crockery item should be put in the blue bin
Hazardous Household Waste
If you have unwanted chemicals eg photographic, garden chemicals these can be taken for safe disposal at Raynesway for more information visit Hazardous Household Waste.

Computer shops and some Charities collect these.

Junk Mail
Junk mail can be put in the Newspaper and Magazine banks. To reduce some of the junk mail please contact the Mail Preference Service.
You can also print a notice for your door saying you don’t wish to get free newspapers.

Low Energy Light bulbs (See Fluorescent tubes)
Small compact Low Energy Lightbulbs can be recycled in the new banks at the larger Sainsburys' stores at Wyvern, Kingsway and Osmaston Park Road. These banks only take the small bulbs not the full tubes.
Medicines and Tablets
Old medicines and tablets should be returned to your doctors or pharmacy. If this is not possible they can be taken to Raynesway for disposal.
Metals
Larger pieces of metal and metal items such as furniture can be taken to Raynesway for recycling. Metal merchants may also accept larger metal items for recycling (They may even pay you for it!)
Mobile Phones
Most shops selling mobile phones will take them back for recycling, many Charity Shops also take them for recycling.

Nappies (Cloth)
Derby City Council supports residents who use real cloth nappies. For more information visit Real Nappies
Oil (Engine)
Engine Oil can easily be recycled at Raynesway. Do not pour this down your drain or in drains in the street
Oil (Cooking)
There is a new Cooking oil bank at Raynesway. The vegetable oil is collected and then processed into fuel at a facility in Derby.
Plate Glass & Window Glass
Plate glass can be taken to Raynesway for disposal, do not put plate glass in the wheeled bin or recycling site.
Paint
Re-useable paint should be taken to Raynesway where we can have some of it recycled for use by local community groups. Old un-useable paint should be left to dry out in the container and disposed of at Raynesway or in the black bin.
Paper
Any white paper – This means that Newspapers, magazines, BT telephone directories, Yellow pages, catalogues like Next and Argos, junk mail, and white paper can be easily be recycled. If you can tear the paper and the fibres are white we will recycle it. We cannot recycle dirty paper, coloured paper and specialist papers.
Paper (Shredded)
Shredded paper can be recycled through the brown bin system (we cannot take it in any other schemes because of the litter problems). It can also be added to home compost heaps.
Plastic Bottles and containers
All plastic bottles and containers can be recycled in the blue recycling bin, recycling sites and at Raynesway. Please remove tops and squash.
Plaster Board
Small amounts of Plasterboard can be taken to Raynesway. You can only take the amount that you can get in the boot of a car, as the site is not licensed for large amounts of Building and construction waste. If you have larger amounts this should be taken to a specialist site or you should hire out a skip or 'Hippo' Bag For more information visit Raynesway
Plant Pots
These can now go in the blue bin. Wyevale Garden Centre in Findern has just installed a plant pot bank at the front of their store check your local garden centre to see if they recycle them.
Printer and inkjet Cartridges
Many shops that sell cartridges now do take back schemes, some charity shops also have schemes

Shoes
Old pairs of shoes can be recycled through the red bag scheme, at Raynesway, at local Charity Shop and at many of our recycling sites. Please tie the shoes together. We cannot recycle shoes that are beyond repair or reuse.

TV’s and Monitors
Old TV’s an monitors can be taken to Raynesway for recycling and reuse or collected in the bulky waste service.
Tyres
Up to Four car, motorbike or bicycle tyres per household can be taken to Raynesway for recycling, we cannot recycle large vehicle tyres.

Wood (timber)
Pieces of timber can be recycled at Raynesway, please do not put them in your brown bin as we cannot tell if they have been treated and this means we may not take your Brown Bin.

Yellow Pages
Yellow pages can now be recycled in the paper recycling scheme. In recent years the paper has been changed to white paper printed yellow instead of using dyed yellow paper, this makes it much easier to recycle.
