The 3R’s of Waste Management - Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Reducing the amount of waste we produce goes a long way to reducing our impact on the environment.
Each year, we generate about 125,000 tonnes of household waste in Derby. Thankfully over 40% is recycled. Of the materials we don’t recycle most end up in rubbish dumps where the biodegradable part generates methane a potent greenhouse gas.
To reduce the UK’s impact on the environment it is important to reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfill. The Government have proposed a Waste Hierarchy to help, as individuals we can also repeat this Hierarchy.
- Waste Prevention
- Reuse
- Recycle / Compost
- Energy Recovery
- Disposal
Waste Prevention
If we avoid making the waste in the first place then we won’t have to use resources recycling and disposing of it.
- Avoid over packaged products, if you have a choice get the one with the least packaging that you have to put in your black bin
- Concentrates are packaged in smaller bottles less damage to the environment.
- Avoid Disposables, as the name suggests they are meant to be thrown away instead of cleaning with a paper towel use a cloth instead
- Put your name on the Mailing Preference Service and reduce the amount of Junk Mail
- Make your own packed lunch instead of buying packaged items from the supermarket
Reuse
Often we can reuse items that we have such as carrier bags, also others may be able to reuse items that we don’t want.
- Auction Websites are an easy way of selling items you don’t want. you’d be amazed at What people will pay for.
- Charity Shops take lots more than just clothes if you contact them with all the items you’ve have they will tell you what they can take.
- Freecycle is a website that allows you to donate unwanted items locally, they have a wanted section as well.
Recycle / Compost
In Derby we have one of the most comprehensive recycling systems. Follow the link to information about our schemes.
Energy Recovery and Disposal
We aim to send as little waste to landfill as is practicable, the less waste we generate the less we have to dispose of.
