We also undertake a variety of projects to enhance the city's
urban countryside. New wildlife habitats such as woodland, ponds and wildflower meadows have been created.
Wildlife webcams have been set up. We’ve surveyed
hedgerows,
ponds and ancient trees in the city because they are important to the city’s wildlife. We've encouraged the setting up of ‘Friends of’ groups to benefit wildlife, the environment and local people, and for people to become
WildDerby Pond Wardens.
‘Friends of’ groups have been set up for:
In June 2008, we designated Sinfin Moor Park and Nature Reserve at Sinfin a local nature reserve. This brings the total number of local nature reserves managed by Derby City Council to eight. We hope to declare Elm Wood at Allenton as a local nature reserve later in the year.
WildDerby also helps community groups and schools undertake projects that improve Derby's biodiversity. We have our 'Floyd's Guides' webpages which give advice on:
as well as a monthly guide to wildlife gardening tips:
We’ve made it easier for people to visit the city's countryside by producing the Let’s go wild in Derby events programme, which brings together a series of free walks and activities to help you enjoy wildlife locally. Mostly led by local groups, the walks and activities are also a fun way to improve your health. We produce a twice yearly newsletter called WildDerby News, which keeps people informed about what work local wildlife and community groups are doing. Working with the Council’s Rights of Way Officer, free leaflets have been produced, which give people information about walks and nature trails in the city.
Our Countryside Directory lists environmental documents and web pages, groups and local authorities.
If you are wanting WildDerby to visit your event, or for WildDerby to give a presentation to your local group, then visit our WildDerby Roadshow and Slideshow webpage.
