Adults with learning difficulties face many problems with everyday life. They may find it easier to deal with these difficulties with help from the Social Services Department. Our aim in Social Services is to help adults with a learning difficulty to live as independently as possible, with support from their families, our staff and other carers.
Because resources are limited, we try to make sure we act fairly to help those in greatest need. We do this by carefully assessing each person's circumstances then, together, we can decide if we can offer help. If so, we agree what services are needed and how quickly we can provide them.
Social Services may offer:
- home care services to help you look after yourself at home and teach you new skills
- day services such as skills training, employment training, leisure services, sports activities and education
- breaks for you or someone who looks after you
- accommodation in the community, our hostels or residential and nursing care, and also placements with family carers
- information about other services for you or for someone who looks after you
Services for carers
Sometimes caring for someone can be very demanding. We may be able to help by providing advice and information, special equipment or short breaks.
How much will it cost?
There is no charge for information and advice or for working out what you need, but there may be a charge for some other services. We will explain fully what, if anything, you will have to pay for a particular service. For some services, we may do a financial assessment to see how much you have to pay.
