Thinking of Moving into Residential Care?
If you have particular problems living at home, Social Services may be able to provide the help you need to make it possible for you to stay at home. However sometimes, we may suggest that the best way you can meet your needs is to move into a care home. There are three types.
- Nursing homes are for those people who need the care and support of a qualified nurse.
- Residential homes have care staff available to meet your care needs.
- Dual registered homes can take people with nursing and residential needs.
Choosing a home
It is important for you to find out as much as possible about the care home you are considering. We can provide information on the services provided by all homes in Derby. All care homes have information brochures and you can ask to see a copy of their latest inspection report. You will need to consider these issues...
- Location. Is the home in an area where you wish to live? Is it convenient for friends and relatives to visit?
- Accommodation. Do you like the room? Are there en-suite facilities? Is there a garden?
- Care. Are the staff pleasant and caring? Are there sufficient activities and is there a good choice of food?
- Provider. Do you prefer a home run by the Council, or by a voluntary organisation or a private owner?
If your circumstances change or you are unhappy with your choice, we will help you to look at alternatives.
How much will it cost?
Not everyone has enough money to pay for their own care. Social Services can provide financial assistance to those whose savings and capital are below £20,500. The amount you may be asked to pay will depend on how much income and capital you have. If we are helping towards the cost of your care, you may choose any home that is prepared to contract with us on our terms and conditions. If you wish to go into a home that charges more than our standard fee, you must have a friend or relative who will agree to ‘top up’ the payment.
