A major project called the 'Osmaston Housing Improvement Zone' was approved on 18 February 2003. The area includes much of the older, privately owned housing in the Osmaston triangle.
Renovation and improvement work has been or will be offered to nearly all the houses in the area. Group Repair Schemes are used to do the work. So far schemes have been completed in:
-
Cotton Lane
-
Grosvenor Street
-
Abingdon Street
-
Davenport Road
-
Osmaston Road
-
Handel Street
-
-
-
Tennyson Street
-
Gresham Road
At the start of 2006 work was taking place in Nightingale Road and to an area-wide scheme to include those who missed out on earlier schemes. These will be completed by April 2006.
One final scheme - again for those who missed out earlier - is being prepared and will start this year.
The longer roads, such as Osmaston Road and Grosvenor Street, were split into several schemes.
By 1 April 2005:
-
23 Group Repair Schemes had been completed with 427 owners fully participating in schemes and another 72 taking advantage of 'free work' to improve the front of their homes
-
20 empty properties had been brought back into use
-
93 low-income families had been helped with essential repairs they could not otherwise afford
-
owners had invested at least £571,000 of their own money towards the cost of the work.
