Home energy - Fuel Poverty and Affordable Warmth in Derby

Derby's Affordable Warmth Strategy

Derby’s Affordable Warmth Strategy was launched on 24 September 2002 at the First Steps Centre in Osmaston.  The strategy's key objectives are to make sure that no-one in Derby suffers from fuel poverty, that excess winter deaths are significantly reduced, and that all residents can afford to heat their homes adequately. We recently produced the fifth annual progress report for Derby’s Affordable Warmth Strategy. The report, covering 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007, gives an update on actions since last year’s progress report and highlights key areas for attention during the financial year 2007-08. The Strategy has continued to develop over the past year. Through the Derby Home Energy Advice Service (DHEAS) the Council has made sure that it keeps activities co-ordinated and delivered in a highly-efficient and cost-effective way.

We estimate that, up to 31 March 2007, there were 18,217 households in Derby suffering from fuel poverty. This means that almost 10 per cent fewer households were suffering from fuel poverty than in March 2001. This has been achieved mainly through the Warm Front grant and ‘Derby Homes Pride’ programme. Other activities that have helped include better partnership working, within and outside the Council.
