The Warm Front scheme

Warm Front is a Government scheme that gives grants to cover the cost of energy efficiency improvements for certain groups of people receiving income or disability benefits. Grants cover packages of insulation and heating measures that are needed worth up to £2,700 for people living in areas connected to the main gas network, and up to £4,000 for people living in areas with no gas connection.

From June 2005, if you have previously benefited from a Warm Front grant you will be able to reapply to see if you qualify for any extra measures. The grant you receive will depend on any previous work done through Warm Front; the way your house or flat is built; and your current levels of heating and insulation. If you want to apply or reapply for a Warm Front grant, or if you want to check if you qualify to apply for a Warm Front grant, call us now on 01332 255622.

You can also apply to the Warm Front Scheme on their website: Warm Front External web link, or call 0800 316 2814.

Fuel company insulation schemes

If you don’t qualify for free improvements from Warm Front, then you may still be able to improve the insulation of your home through the companies that supply gas and electricity.

All the main companies provide very good discounts on both loft and cavity wall insulation. It doesn’t matter who provides your gas and electricity at the moment, and they will not make you change supplier.

Take a look at our latest Scheme Sheet This is a pdf file 165 Kb, for more details on insulation discount schemes or call the DHEAS helpline on 01332 255622.

Gas and electricity tariffs

With the recent increases in energy prices, changing suppliers can save you money on your gas and electricity bills, especially if you haven’t changed your supplier before, or haven’t changed for a long time. As well as saving you money by switching to a cheaper tariff, fuel companies can offer benefits such as:

  • discounts for duel fuels
  • discounts for paying by Direct Debit, paperless billing and online account management, and
  • the option of buying ‘green energy’. ‘Green energy’ is usually energy that has been produced by renewable sources, such as wind, wave or solar power, or a percentage of the money you pay for your fuel bills is used to fund the development and production of renewable energy.

With so many gas and electricity prices, services and suppliers to choose from, it can be difficult to find out what the best deal is, and how to get it. There are several organisations that offer fuel supplier comparisons so that you can find a cheaper deal and switch your utility supplier online or over the phone. This could help you save up to £170 per year.

Uswitch.com External web link and Moneysupermarket.com External web link both offer fuel tariff comparisons and information to help you find the best deals and change suppliers.

If you would prefer, you can contact the DHEAS helpline on 01332 255622 and we will do the comparison for you. Please make sure you have your recent gas and electricity bills to hand!

If you are over 60, there are special deals available to you through schemes such as Powergen Staywarm and Age Concern. For more information, visit our over 60s grants and schemes page.
