The Council is committed to detecting and preventing abuse of the Housing Benefits System. This is the responsibility of our Inspection Service within the Resources Directorate.
We have a dedicated team who undertake investigations into allegations of benefit fraud. All our investigations are carried out fairly, with integrity and in a professional manner by fully trained and accredited staff.
Our referrals come from a variety of sources including:
- members of the public
- officers and members of the Council
- other partner organisations including Government departments
- we also match our benefits data with other organisations to identify claims that are potentially fraudulent or irregular.
Where appropriate, offenders are sanctioned in accordance with Housing Benefit legislation.
