Benefits of working for Derby City Council

We offer many career opportunities as wide ranging as grounds maintenance to architectural design, social work to teaching, and administration to health and safety.

Our employees enjoy excellent conditions of service, including Busy Bees childcare vouchers and a final salary pension scheme along with a flexible approach to working hours. We believe in investing in our employees and offer many training and development opportunities.

Busy Bees

We offer employees the chance to buy Busy Bees childcare vouchers. These are non taxable and exempt from National Insurance contributions. You could save up to £1196 per parent per year towards the cost of your childcare. Eligible working parents with children under 16 years are entitled to childcare vouchers. They can be used to pay for day nurseries, childminders, before and after school clubs and even holiday clubs for school aged children.

Final Salary Pension

You will be able to join or continue in the Local Government Pension Scheme, contributing approximately 6% of your salary.

Employee Assistance and Counselling

Lifestyle Action is the new Employee Assistance Programme for Derby City Council employees and their immediate families.

It is a free and confidential, telephone based service for you to use should you ever need expert, impartial counselling or help to deal with the stresses, strains and problems of everyday life.

A single phone call is the first step to help you begin to resolve any problems or concerns you may have.

The advisers and counsellors can discuss areas such as:

  • Stress, anxiety, bereavement, relationships, debt, bullying, harassment, discrimination, domestic violence
  • Other personal matters such as health information and legal and tax advice
  • The service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year
  • Some issues might need follow-up calls, and these can be set-up for six following occasions
  • All Counsellors are registered with the BACP British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • All calls are strictly confidential
  • All calls are free

Work-life-balance Scheme

Many of our jobs are covered by our Work-life-balance scheme which allows employees to take additional time off, or work more or fewer hours during a working day. The conditions of our work-life-balance scheme are dependent on the job you do.

Annual Leave

We offer a minimum of 20 days annual leave, based on 37 hours, excluding public and bank holidays.
