Equality and Diversity

Group of people in a parkWe are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from anyone who feels they meet the requirements of our vacancies – these are listed on the person specification. We aim to make sure that our employees come from as diverse backgrounds as the people we provide our services to. We also feel it's extremely important that people in equality groups are represented at all grades in the Council, particularly at senior levels.

On this page you will find information about the things we do to encourage job applications from people with diverse backgrounds and also what we do for our employees.

Guaranteed interview scheme for disabled people

We guarantee an interview for disabled people if they meet the essential requirements of the job.

We realise that some disabled people may not want a guaranteed interview. If this applies to you, the choice is entirely yours.

If you do want to apply under the guaranteed interview scheme, please tell us by filling in the relevant section of the job application form.

Reasonable adjustments

We will make reasonable adjustments for disabled people both during the recruitment process and in the job itself.

For example, you may need a BSL (British Sign Language globe icon) interpreter at interview or you may need us to consider removing a particular job requirement, such as the need for a driving licence.

Please tell us what adjustments you need by filling in the relevant section of the job application form. If you are unable to complete our online application form, please get in touch and we will give you the application form in another way that will help you access it.

Stonewall

We are proud to be Stonewall Diversity Champions globe icon and we are working hard to enter the top 100 workplace equality index.

Employee support networksA circle of hands on sand

Employee networks offer help, advice and support in a friendly and safe environment. The networks help us remove any barriers to employment, service delivery and help us promote equality and diversity at the council. We have three employee support networks:

  • BESN - Black Employees Support Network
  • DEN - Disabled Employees Network
  • LGBT Employees Network - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender

Disability equality at work

We like to encourage our disabled employees to fill in a disability equality at work form so we can do all we can to make sure reasonable adjustments are made. We also have disability leave for disabled employees to take time out of work to attend appointments or treatment related to their impairment.
