Lending Services


Derby City Libraries lend:

Audio Books 
Audiobooks are available on both cassette and compact disc.

We have a good selection of fiction, and smaller collections of humour, poetry, plays, biographies and travel writing.

You may borrow up to 20 audio books for 4 weeks. You may have to pay a hire charge;  The standard charge is 70p

The charge is only 35p if you are 60+ or if you are receiving  Working Families Tax Credit, Incapacity Benefit, Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support or if you are dependant on someone who receives Income Support.

There is no charge for children up to their 18th birthday or if you are a home library user, blind or are visually impaired.

Books 
We have a collection of over 378,000 books in our City Libraries, including bestsellers, prizewinners, contemporary fiction, local authors, books in European and Indic languages, and the classics. If you cannot find the book you want, we may be able to get it for you for a small fee from another library in Derby or Derbyshire, or from a library outside.

Detective novels, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, romances, short stories, westerns, large print and other novels are arranged in alphabetical order of author.

Our non-fiction book stock is divided into subjects according to the Dewey system of numbers. Each subject has its own number, and books are shelved in number order.

You may borrow up to 20 books for 4 weeks.

Information on joining the library

Books on Derby and Derbyshire
We have a range of books about local industry, villages, railways, walks, industrial archaeology, flora and fauna, churches, architecture, stately homes, and the Peak District.

For in depth research into Derby and Derbyshire facts and figures and family history, you may wish to use the Local Studies library.

Careers Books
We have a collection of books for loan on individual careers, taking your gap year, how to fill in application forms, CVs and job interviews.

We also have local and national newspapers containing vacancy supplements, and job sheets from Derby and adjacent local councils and health authorities. You can look at these in the library.

CDs
We have a selection including pop, dance, rock, rap, soul, reggae, chill out, country and western, folk, film and TV music, easy listening, blues, jazz, brass/military, world music, classical, opera, instrumental, and sound effects.

You may borrow up to 20 CDs for 1 week. There is a hire charge to pay.

The standard charge is £1.00

The charge is only 50p if you are 60+ or if you are receiving  Working Families Tax Credit, Incapacity Benefit, Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support or if you are dependant on someone who receives Income Support.

The charge is 50p for children up to their 18th birthday and if you are visually impaired.

DVDs
We keep a large selection of DVDs for hire including recent Hollywood releases, Indian films and family films.

You may borrow up to 4 DVDs for a period of 3 days.  Children under 12 may borrow up to 2.  There is a hire charge to pay.

The standard charge is £2.50

The charge is only £2.00 if you are 60+ or if you are receiving  Working Families Tax Credit, Incapacity Benefit, Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support or if you are dependant on someone who receives Income Support.

The charge is £2.00 for children up to their 18th birthday and if you are hearing impaired.

Please note that 15 and 18 certificate DVDs cannot be taken out on a child's library ticket.

Language Courses
You may borrow cassettes, CDs and CD-ROMs to help you to learn a foreign language. These are free of charge and may also include a book. They may be linked to television and radio courses.

Language tapes are treated as books, and you may borrow up to 20 items for 4 weeks.

Maps
We have 1:50000 scale maps of the whole country for loan. We also have road atlases, and maps of foreign cities and countries.

Magazines and Periodicals
We take a range of general interest magazines. You may read the current copy in the library, and borrow previous editions.

Writers Corner
We have a collection of books to help you structure and publish your work. We display posters giving information on local writers and poetry groups, and on competitions.
