Investing in Derby Local Studies Library
We want to make it easier for customers to access the material held by Derby Studies Library. To do we this want to improve the catalogue. This means temporarily changing the opening hours of the library from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2011.
Opening Times 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2010
We have listened to your feedback and can now report the opening pattern for a six month period from January 2010:
Monday 1pm – 7pm
Tuesday closed
Wednesday 1pm – 5pm
Thursday 9am – 12.30pm
Friday 9am – 12.30pm
Saturday 9.30am – 4pm
This pattern of opening will help us to achieve a number of aims:
• We will retain evening opening, for customers who work 9am-5pm
• We will retain Saturday opening, for families, young people and customers who work during the week
• We will be open Wednesday afternoons to offer customers in the city centre Library access when the Central Library is closed
• We will be open early in the morning to meet current customer demand for internet use
• We will achieve a full day for staff to catalogue, to help efficiency
Parking
A car parking space is available at Derby Local Studies Library for disabled visitors. This needs to be reserved in advance so please contact us on (01332) 255393.
Facilities
We have over 100,000 items available to consult within the library. There is a small selection of items available for visitors to browse, but the main collection is 'behind the scenes' and is available on request. There is no charge for looking at our material. Photocopies, within copyright regulations, can be made for 10p per copy.
There are microfilm machines to view newspapers and census details on, and microfiche machines to view the index of births, deaths and marriages and the IGI on. They are heavily used so you are strongly urged to book these in advance by contacting us. There is no charge to use these machines, but there is a charge of 50p per sheet to print out. For this a film or fiche-printer will need to be booked.
The library has 4 computers that can be used for the internet and word processing. The citizenship course and practice tests are available to use via the computer. We also have a range of family and local history CD-ROMs that can be used in the library.
We regret that there are no public toilets in our building. The nearest are by the tourist information office in the market place.
Any group, children, students or local history societies who would like special help in using local studies material can contact a local Studies Librarian to arrange a workshop.
Disabled Access
We have limited disabled parking that needs to be booked in advance. There is a ramped access for wheelchairs to the side of the building. If you will require additional help within the library please let us know so we can prepare for your visit.
