About Children's and Young People's Library Service

Children of all ages and their parents and carers are welcome in Derby Libraries - all our libraries have something to offer you.

There is no age limit – even the youngest babies can have their own library ticket! Our youngest members are just a few weeks old.

All our lending libraries have special collections of books and magazines for children and young people – these include:

  • Board books for babies and toddlers
  • Picture books
  • Books for children who are learning to read
  • Stories and information books for all ages
  • Books to help with homework
  • Audiobooks on CD
  • Books for teenagers
  • Graphic novels

All of these are free to borrow.

We have a small collection of children's books in Braille.  Please ask at your local library for more information.

Most libraries also have music CDs and DVDs, which children and young people can borrow at the current rate.

Children under 12 can borrow up to 10 items – this can include 2 music CDs and 2 DVDs.

Young people aged 12 – 19 can borrow up to 20 items, including 2 music CDs and 2 DVDs.

Derby City Libraries has a specialist team of Children’s Librarians who co-ordinate the selection of children's and young people's books and organise children’s activities and events.
