Learning with Derby Museums

Welcome to our new education programme, full of exciting learning opportunities for you and your pupils!

Derby Museums offers a range of innovative learning opportunities for school groups across our three sites: Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Pickford’s House Museum and The Silk Mill.

Choose from taught workshops or self-guided visits that cover curriculum-linked topics in Art and Design, History and Science.

Learning at Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Collections and displays at Derby Museum and Art Gallery include archaeology, porcelain, geology, natural history, and fine art. It houses the renowned Joseph Wright of Derby collection and has a varied temporary exhibition programme.

This 1770 Georgian town house was designed by local architect Joseph Pickford as his family home and business premises. Rooms are furnished in the style of the period with the upper rooms hosting changing costume displays and a permanent display of toy theatres.

Learning at The Silk Mill

The museum stands on the site of the world’s first modern factory – the silk mill of John and Thomas Lombe – and is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. There are displays on Derbyshire’s industries and working life including mining, brick making, textiles, railway engineering, power for industry and Rolls-Royce aero engines.

Taught Workshops

Our taught workshops are led by trained education staff. Workshops last for 90 minutes and are for one class. Montage of the type of items to be found in  a discovery box - Egyptian artifacts, prints of paintings and drawing and potteryAll workshops are charged at £60 each.

Discovery Boxes

Our Discovery Boxes contain handling objects, worksheets, gallery activities and comprehensive teacher notes. The boxes are designed to be used independently as part of a self-guided visit.

Discovery boxes will be available free of charge during January and February 2008. Bookings made from March 1 2008 will be charged at a rate of £10 per booking. You may use the box with more than one group if you wish. If you intend to do this, it is recommended that you stagger your groups as the boxes are not intended for use by more than 30 children at a time.
