Welcome to our new education programme, full of exciting learning opportunities for you and your pupils!

Derby Museums offers a range of innovative learning opportunities for school groups across three sites: Museum and Art Gallery, Pickford's House and The Silk Mill.

Choose from taught workshops or self-guided visits that cover curriculum-linked topics in Art and Design, History and Science.

Learning at Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Collections and displays at Museum and Art Gallery include archaeology, porcelain, geology, natural history, and fine art. It houses the renowned Joseph Wright of Derby collection and has a varied temporary exhibition programme.

Rooms are furnished in the style of the period with the upper rooms hosting changing costume displays and a permanent display of toy theatres.

Learning at The Silk Mill

The museum stands on the site of the world’s first modern factory – the silk mill of John and Thomas Lombe – and is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. There are displays on Derbyshire’s industries and working life including mining, brick making, textiles, railway engineering, power for industry and Rolls-Royce aero engines.

Taught Workshops

Our taught workshops are led by trained education staff. We deliver workshops both in our museums and out in school.

Our Discovery Boxes contain handling objects, worksheets, gallery activities and comprehensive teacher notes. The boxes are designed to be used independently as part of a self-guided visit.

Discovery boxes are charged at a rate of £10 per day. You may use the box with more than one class if you wish. If you intend to do this, it is recommended that you stagger your groups as the boxes are not intended for use by more than 30 children at a time.
