The Captive

The Captive, oil on canvas

The Captive , c1775-77

oil on canvas, 1016 x 1270mm

The subject was inspired by Laurence Sterne's book 'A Sentimental Journey' , published in 1768. The captive is an image imagined by the character Parson Yorick, on losing his passport. Wright's pose is based on that of Michelangelo's Adam.
