Littleover Lane Allotments

Plot 52 Mrs A Kenyon 2nd place most environmentally friendly category 2004, 3rd in 2005 (Derby In Bloom) The site was first established in 1920 and was purchased by one of the original members, it has remained private ever since. There have, however, been a couple of alterations over the years. In the 1960s the Normanton substation was built here and in the 1980s further land was given up to provide a boundary with SevenFields/ Sunnydale Park. The site does retain a number of Anderson shelters, which are used for sheds and as compost bins.

There are number of long term plot holders, several have been here since the Second World War and one member, who joined in the 1970s, is now in her 90s.

The allotments are mainly used for growing brassicas, the soil being well suited heavy red marl. However there are also lots of fruit trees, 2 vineyards and figs grown. One member of the site exhibits Dahlias. Another member of the site keeps a number of breeds of chickens. Generally animals aren't encouraged but dogs are permitted on leads.

David Kenyon's sunflowers (14ft 10" highest so far!)The site is very proud of its horticultural centre - this includes a large greenhouse and walled garden as well as a museum housing old tools like rotovators. They get over 600 visits a year from junior school children.

They are also an active member of the National Garden Scheme - Globe icon, gardens open for charity (Yellow Book). This is a biannual event held on the first Sundays in June and September. In June they have plant sales and in September they sell produce.

They also have several communal and wildlife areas at the site. There is a five plot nature area called the "Kingfisher Project", which is governed by a local panel. Many individual plots also have their own ponds.

The association have taken an active part in the biennial Eco-Fest over the years and enter the  Derby in Bloom - Allotment competition. In 2006 they won first prize for Best Site, and were runners up in 2007. They have over 20 other plaques for the 1995 - 2007 period. In 2008 John & Carolyn Sutton came second in the - Best Vegetable or Fruit Garden, category. In the future the site is planning to hold their own competitions.
