Parks and Recreation

Mundy Play Centre

In 1903 Mrs Mundy donated five acres of the Markeaton Estate for use as a recreational ground. In 1924 she donated seven additional acres and the origins of what is now the play centre were founded. The then called the Mundy playing field gained another six acres off Kedleston Road which was made into the paddling pool. Today the play centre has become an excellent and well used facility; it is particularly popular in summer months due to the amount it has to offer younger families. The play centre is situated in the much larger area of Markeaton Park. There is also the Mundy Pleasure Ground situated not far from Markeaton Park.

During the school holidays the centre opens at approximately 11.00am and close between 5.30pm to 6pm, depending on how busy it is.

Donkey Rides

There is special sanded enclosure where you can have a ride on a donkey. The donkeys are available between February and the end of September depending on the weather. They cost £1.50 for a ride.

Mundy Train

A road train, the Mundy Express, runs from the Mundy play centre the full length of park. There are several carriages towed by the main engine. It runs from Easter until September at weekends and during school holidays, it costs £0.95 for the round trip, which you pay for on the train. Bookings can be made for large parties at other times during the year.

The Pool

Large Paddling Pool

This is one of the main attractions of the centre in the hot summer months, the huge paddling pool is fairly shallow and ideal for children; it also has 3 fountains which provide a lot of fun. The sloped grass embankment to one side of the pool is ideal for parents who wish to keep a watchful eye.

Mundy TrainMiniature Steam Railway

The parks fifteen inch minimum gauge railway train originally opened in 1989 and extended onto Mundy Park in 1996 where one of its stations is based at the side of the artificial canoeing lake. From here you can catch the train back over to other side of the park a total distance of 1,400 yards.

The trip is £0.90p one way or £1.80 for the round trip, a return journey to either side of the Park. It is free for under threes unless they use a seat.
