Demand for allotments has never been higher and they are a great way to reduce food miles, get healthy exercise and socialise with others. Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked fruit and vegetables!
The competition is a recognition of all the hard work allotment tenants put into their plots. Each cateogry promotes and challenges different aspects of horticulture.
For 2008 there were 7 categories within the competition
Best Site: This award was in recognition of the City's best allotment site.
WINNER : Nottingham Road and District Allotment Association
2nd: Merrill Way Allotments
3rd: Spondon Horticultural Society – Wastefields
Most improved site: This award was in recognition of the hard work being carried out to improve and develop a site.
1st: Merrill Way Allotments
2nd: Field Lane International Allotment Association
3rd: Normanton Allotments Association
Best Leisure Garden
: This award was for the allotment plot that combined food production along with a leisure with ornamental content.
1st: Alvin Thomas – Kedleston Road Allotments
2nd: Paul Hancock – Sinfin Moor Allotments
3rd: John Cargill – Spondon Horticultural Society - Louise Greaves
Best Vegetable or Fruit Garden: This category was in recognition of the best plot for producing vegetables and/or fruit. Over 50% of the plot needed to be assigned to the growing of fruit and/or vegetables.
1st: Mr F Clarke – Little Chester Allotments
2nd: John & Carolyn Sutton – Littleover Lane Allotments
3rd: Eugene McKenna – Firs Estate International Allotments Association

Best Crop: Simply in recognition of the quality of crop grown on an allotment plot.
1st: Mr D. Howitt, Brassicas – Normanton Allotments
2nd: B Byard, Peas – Swiss Cottage Allotments Association
3rd: G. Harrison, Potatoes – Spondon Horticultural Society – Wastefields
Most Environmentally Friendly Plot:
An award focusing on use of environmentally friendly and sustainable methods for gardening. It looked at the use of composting, recycling and methods of pest control. The category also looking at how the plot is harmonious with wildlife and its habitats.
1st: Linda Argur & Steve Herne – Sinfin Moor Allotments
2nd: Chris Rudd – Merrill Way Allotments
3rd: Eileen Kenyon – Kedleston Road Allotments
Best Scarecrow
New for 2008, whether it was an ingenious way to keep the birds from eating the produce or an attractive old fashion well dress scarecrow this was the chance to get noticed!
Winner: Mr M. Welsh – Normanton Allotments Society - Cyberman!
