Markeaton Recreational Ground and Mundy Pleasure Ground

Mundy Pleasure Ground viewMarkeaton Recreation Ground is on the City side of Mackworth Road with Mundy Pleasure Ground on the opposite side. The road is heavily lined with established trees and it is actually only the middle section that is called Mackworth Road. As it heads onto Kedleston Road it becomes Cowley St and towards Ashbourne Road it's Merchant St.

You can also access Mundy Pleasure Ground from the pathway off Watson Street, and get onto Markeaton Recreational Ground from St Annes Close.

The area has two names as the land was given to the City on two separate occasions. Firsty, land was donated in 1895, long before Markeaton Park. 9 acres, on the crest of Mackworth Road, were given by Mr and Mrs W.Mundy. In 1905 it was linked with an additional 5 acres which is the Mundy Pleasure Ground. This was donated by Mrs E.Mundy in memory of her recently deceased husband. However, her condition was that a road be built to connect Ashbourne and Kedleston Roads.

Details

Markeaton Brook - Globe Icon, runs along the edge of both areas past the old Mill and the Bowls Club. Markeaton Recreation Ground meets part of the City known as the West End, here is a large church here called St Annes. The Recreational ground has two football St Annes from Markeaton Recreaton Groundpitches on it which are split by a central path between the church and the Mackworth Road. Originally the West Enders called it the "new rec", and there were swings and a maypole here.

Mundy Pleasure Ground, is mainly open space, one side backs onto what is predominantly Victorian housing. There are two children’s play areas, one of which incorporates a basketball hoop.
