Answers:

Do sports and leisure centres run anything for beginners?

Yes. We know that it can be intimidating starting exercise for the first time or after a break and so we have several activities and sessions in place to start you off.

Gym: If you fancy trying a gym session, we will start you off with an Activation session. You will find out how all the machines work and you will get an exercise programme to suit your individual needs. There is always at least one instructor in the gym to help you and give you advice whenever you need it.

Workout: We also have beginner workout classes in most of our sports centres. Classes include 'Aqua Fit for beginners' and Active Living and Beginners' - these are for people who are beginners to exercise or returning after a long break. All of our classes are graded depending on the intensity and choreography. Every class has a different level, from Level 1 to Level 3 as well as classes suitable for all levels, so you can choose a class suitable for your ability.

Swim: Swimming is an easy activity to start off with. Most adults know how to swim, however if you need any tuition, we can provide that for you too.

Do you run anything for the over 50s?

Our Active Living sessions are designed for older people and we have a range of activities to help you get active across most of our sports centres.

Workout and social sessions: Choose from social activities such as badminton, squash, short mat bowls and table tennis, low impact aerobics sessions and sequence dancing.

Swim and gym: There are Active Living swimming and gym sessions where you will be with like minded people your own age so you can enjoy exercise in a social, friendly environment.

Do not forget to purchase your Passport to Leisure card and benefit from concessionary prices. If you are over 60-years-old, show your proof of age (Goldcard travel pass) to pay the concessionary rate.

Do you have any activities just for women?

We have a range of activities including workout classes, gym sessions and swimming sessions which are for women only across our centres.

For more information, visit our Make You Move Your Way page for a full list of women's only activities or visit our swimming times and prices page to find out more information.

Do you have anything for children in the centres so I can exercise and not have to worry about them?

Crèche and Activity Club: We have a crèche at Queen’s Leisure Centre, Moorways Sports Centre and Springwood Leisure Centre, and an Activity Club for older children. The prices start at £1.50 for one hour.

Children's Coaching Courses: We also have children's coaching courses and sports clubs taking place at all the centres, which means they can get involved in a sport while you get active. Your child can also take part in swimming lessons based on the nationally recognised ASA teaching plan which take place over term time, or in intensive courses during the school holidays.

What can my children do during the school holidays?

During the school holidays, there are activity schemes on at our centres. Most of these run from 9am to 3pm every day, giving you plenty of free time during the day to have a swim, go to the gym or a game of squash with a friend.

Activities include:

  • b-active Xperience - all day and half day sessions with a wide range of sports, fun and games
  • b-active goes green - outdoor activities including grass boarding, nature trails, den building and much more to exercise the mind and body. FREE.
  • Activity Sessions - one hour sessions for your child while you exercise.
  • Family Activity Sessions
  • Coaching Courses - including trampolining, netball, football, gymnastics, basketball and much more.
  • Swimming - including Intensive Learn to Swim courses, Aquafit, Family Swim and Inflatables.

For a full list of activities, time and dates please visit www.bactivederby.com.

I am a parent and cannot find the time to get active! How can I exercise?

There are half hour classes, which will give you enough time to get to the centre and back to work again in your lunch. Speak to your employer about work/life balance. Healthy, active employees results in motivated more productive employees.

Alternatively, go for a swim or take a colleague with you and have a game of badminton. Do not forget the weekend either – drop the kids off at a friend's or their grandparents or be active with them. There is no excuse - if you want to be active you will find the time!

How much does membership cost and how does it compare to other centres?

We offer an affordable alternative to private leisure centres that may charge anything up to £71 for an individual monthly membership. There are many different options you can choose from, depending on what services you want to use (gym, workout, swim), how you want to pay (monthly cash, annually cash, direct debit) and if you want an individual, joint or off peak membership.

There are no expensive joining fees and all cards include off-peak squash. You can also get a free Activation session if you choose to join the gym and you can use your card at Queen’s Leisure Centre, Moorways Sports Centre and Swimming Pool, Springwood Leisure Centre and Shaftesbury Sports Centre.

The bfit membership card is great value - for example, a monthly off-peak Gym and Swim bfit membership, paid by direct debit is £24.55. Call Sport and Leisure for more information on 01332 641234 or pop in to your local leisure centre.

I do not want to become a member. Can I pay each time I visit?

As well as the bfit membership card, we have a Passport to Leisure Scheme where you can pay as you play and benefit from great discounts. The card costs £11.90 for one year for an adult, £6.05 for juniors and concessionary groups such as over 60s, full time students and unemployed, or £23.80 for a family which may consist of up to two adults and three children, giving the family a maximum of five cards.

You may be eligible for a Recreation Passport to Leisure, which gives you free use of some activities during off peak periods. You must be a Derby resident for this card and be in receipt of certain benefits.

Find out more at your local leisure centre or call Sport and Leisure on 01332 641234 or visit our Passport to Leisure page.
