Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund
The Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund gives financial support to Derbyshire’s top sporting performers to help them with their training needs or equipment. Derby City Council is a sponsor of the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund programme for 2009 and here is a list of talented athletes from Derby:
Yasmin Miller (Athletics)
13 year old Yasmin won gold in two events at the England Athletics U15 Indoor Championships in Birmingham in February. She also won gold in both the U15 girls’ 200m and 60m hurdles at the Northern Indoor Championships in Sheffield in January.
Daniel Hong (Badminton)
12 year old Daniel from Oakwood is the Derbyshire U13 champion. He has played for Derbyshire for the past three years and recently made his debut for the U17 team. He has been recognised among the top ten in the country and attends England U13 training camps.
Mikey Manghum (Basketball)
17 year old Mikey from Oakwood has played for and captained the England U18 team at various tournaments. Among his recent achievements was being chosen to start in the European Championships U18s.
Rema Lascelles (Basketball)
17 year old Rema will travel with the England U18s team to Belgium in July for a week’s training camp and to play an International. He is also working hard to make the England squad that will be playing in the European Championships this summer.
Joshua Ward-Hibbert (Basketball)
15 year old Joshua is a member of Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club. He has played for the region a year early and has also been playing in the England development squad.
Gill Watson (Biathlon)
Gill from Chellaston is the top adventure racer in Great Britain. She competed in the World Adventure Race series in Portugal where she finished fifth. She won the Quest Adventure Race series and Ace series.
Talia Anthony (Boxing)
17 year old Talia from Oakwood is a national champion (Class A) and hopes to box for England in the next 12 months.
Jodie Brierley (Boxing)
17 year old Jodie won a gold medal at the Maj Box Cup in Sweden last year. She was also runner up in the recent ABA Championships and was the first female to box for the Midlands in an inter-counties competition.
Daniel Longhurst (Equestrian)
12 year old Daniel from Oakwood will be competing at the Special Olympics in July representing the East Midlands Equestrian Team. Last year, he competed at the RDA National Championships where he won the countryside challenge.
Demi Watkins (Gymnastics)
13 year old Demi competed at the World Championships in Portugal winning a silver medal for tumbling in the U13 age group. She is due to compete in an international competition in Bulgaria on April 22 to 28.
Charlotte Caunt (Gymnastics)
12 year old Charlotte from Mackworth represented GB and the East Midlands in the Tumbling World Championships in Portugal. She finished third in the British Championships in tumbling. She is due to compete in an international competition in Bulgaria in April.
Chloe Astle (Inline Speedskating)
12 year old Chloe from Oakwood has been inline speedskating in competitive events since the age of seven and holds British records in many different race distances including the 1500m track record. She won the British Marathon Championships for her age group and the London inline skating half marathon.
Lydia Bunn (Inline Speedskating)
In the past 12 months, Lydia from Spondon has broken three British records, for the 200m relay and 500m. The 13 year old became a British champion indoors for the third year running.
Simon Foskett (Sailing)
17 year old Simon from Allestree competed at the 420 World Championships in Athens in 2008 and is ranked within the top three male 420 teams in the country.
Matthew Foskett (Sailing)
15 year old Matthew from Allestree completed his last year in the Optimist (Junior class) as part of the Optimist National squad in 2008, completing the year with an 11th overall at the Optimist Nationals. He has now progressed into the 420 (youth class) and has been selected for the National Transitional squad 420.
Zichen Liu (Swimming)
18 year old Zichen from Allenton is a multiple national finalist who has a serious chance of making the European Junior Championships next summer.
Christopher Simpson (Tennis)
Christopher, 16, is currently ranked No 17 at 16 and under level in the British rankings. He is competing at international level, taking part in tournaments across Britain and Europe.
Roisin Mullins (Tennis)
Roisin, 16, is currently ranked No 7 at 17 and under level in Great Britain despite being a year younger in the age group. She is currently competing at international level and was a quarter finalist at the 16 and under National Championships last summer.
Mark Gregory (Weightlifting)
Mark from Littleover represented Great Britain at the IPF Junior World Powerlifting Championships and won three bronze medals.
