National Physical Education and School Sport Professional Development

In order to raise the overall quality of PE and school sport across England, it is important that teachers and other school staff receive appropriate development and support to help them deliver two hours of high quality PE each week along with a range of beneficial school sport sessions out of hours.

The National PE and School Sport Professional Development Programme will support the implementation of all strands within the Government's PE and School Sport for Young People Strategy (PESSyP). In particular it will improve the quality of teaching, coaching and learning in PE and school sport.

    Specialist Sports Colleges

Derby has two Specialist Sports Colleges. Sport is one of the specialisms withing the Specialist Schools programme. The programme helps schools, in partnership with private sector sponsors and supported by additional Government funding, to establish distinctive identities through their chosen specialism and achieve their targets to raise standards.

The vision of Sports Colleges is to raise standards of achievement across the school using physical education to inspire and motivate students in all areas of study. The Sports College are local hubs for promoting excellence in physical education and community sport, building links between schools, sports organisations and communities. Sports Colleges are expected to develop a positive sports ethos throughout the school and within their local community which inspires staff, students and families.

In Derby there are two Specialist Sports College, one covering the west of Derby and one covering the east of Derby.

    Derby City Schools' Sports Association

The Derby City Schools' Sports Association, DCSSA, is the voluntary organisation responsible for the majority of school sport within Derby City. Its parent organisation is the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association, DSSA. Hundreds of teachers and other school staff in Derby give up their time voluntarily to ensure that young people access sport and dance opportunities. Many of these activities take place after school as inter school competitions or festivals.

Talented young sports people are identified and referred to the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association and may go on to represent their county, region or country in their chosen sport.

For more information about the DCSSA, please contact the Physical Education Advisor on 01332 641268.
