• Walk or cycle with your children to their school. Even if you live too far away why not drive to a friend’s house, who lives closer to your school, and walk or cycle the rest of the way together. Remember to wear bright clothes and use bike reflectors so you can be seen on autumn evenings.

• Get active by trying a different activity each week. Why not let each member of your family choose a new activity that the whole family can do together - fly a kite or kick a ball around, throw a ball, play tag or go for a bike ride.

• Walking doesn't have to stop because it’s autumn! Swap your sandals for wellies this autumn and try looking for leaves, trees and birds in the local park. Get outside, even if the weather is cold - once you get moving, you’ll soon warm up.

• Arrange to meet up with other families and do activities together. Children enjoy playing with friends and you can have a good chat whilst being active too.

• On a sunny autumn day get outdoors and into the garden. Whilst you dig and weed, your children can be active by playing games. In no time your family and your garden will be blooming.

• Dancing is a fun activity that gets your heart moving and your spirit soaring. Consider enrolling in a dance class or simply pump up the volume on the stereo, push back the sofa and bop in the comfort of your own home.

• Cycling is a great way to explore your neighbourhood with friends and family. Get on your bike this autumn and cycle as much as you can. Remember to wear a helmet and visible jacket so you can be seen and be safe. Visit the Cycle Derby websiteglobe icon for a list of cycling events you can join in with.

• If it’s raining outside contact your local leisure centre and find out what they have on offer. For example, going for a swim at your local pool is great fun, good exercise and can be done in any weather.

• We may not have the Alps but we do have indoor ski slopes. Find your nearest one and book a snowboarding or skiing lesson for the whole family.

• Rugby, netball, football and hockey are all winter outdoor sports. Contact the b-sporty team on 01332 715665 for information on how you can join a local club.

• Encourage your children to play at school in their break times. If it is allowed let them take equipment, for example, a skipping rope or ball to school so they can play games in the playground.

• Spend less time in front of the TV, playing computer games or surfing the net. Get up and go and do something more active instead!

• Lock up the car and get your walking boots on. Leave your car at home for everyday short journeys - your family will feel fitter, you’ll save money on petrol and help save the environment – all in one go!

• Give active presents for birthdays and Christmas. Make sure there is always a skipping rope, Frisbee, football or active gift amongst the presents.

• Schedule an activity every weekend. Include activities everyone likes doing and get the whole family involved.
