Markets and Fairs

street market

Derby City Council manages the Council's five markets, issue Street Trading consents, manage a Sunday Car Boot Sale and protect the Council’s Market franchise held under a Royal Charter from King Charles II.

Around 700-800 years ago, the right to hold a market was a highly valued privilege granted by the monarch to nobles who enjoyed his favour. Where such markets were held, people travelled from miles around to buy and sell the essentials of everyday life.

A day at the market was just that! The journey to market took a third of the day, trading required another third, and the weary journey home used up the remaining third. A man was deemed to be able to travel 20 miles in a day and thus it was determined that markets must be at least six and two-third miles apart. This calculation is still used today as the basis for the protection of market rights.

Towns grew up around the site of regular markets, which were usually held on one or two days each week, or on special feasts and festivals. Many of today's thriving communities owe their existence to the market in their midst.

Speciality Markets

  • Farmers Markets
More than ever, Farmers' Markets are good for farmers, rural communities, market towns, the environment, your health and your taste buds. As usual, there are three golden rules that should apply to a genuine Farmers' Market. They are:

    • producers must be local, defined as within a specified radius of the market (normally 30 miles)
    • producers must sell their own produce. Bakers etc must use a minimum of one local ingredient
    • the person behind the stall must be the producers, a close family member or an employee directly involved with production, allowing you to ask questions about how it was produced.

Markets are held every third Thursday in each month throughout the year on the Market Place in Derby.
