How can The SPACE help me?

When you first come in to visit us a project worker will be in our reception to greet you. You should feel free to chat to them; they are friendly, well-trained, knowledgeable and here to help you.

There is a good chance that the project workers will be able to help you themselves. They will take you into a quiet side-room, if you want some privacy, and talk about whatever assistance you may need.

It may be that there are outside agencies that could also help you, for example with benefits or housing, and if you agree the project worker will be happy to refer you on and support you.

We also run some on-site specialist sessions, such as sexual health or mental health, and the project worker would also be able to explain how these services may be of use to you.

And don’t worry. The only adults allowed in the building during working hours are the staff. This is to ensure that you feel comfortable and safe here, and that you feel able to discuss anything you like in confidence and privacy.

Will my enquiry be confidential?

If you are coming in to speak to us or to our specialist staff (like doctors or nurses), you might be worried that your family or school will be told.

All of our staff are not allowed to give out your information without you giving permission first.

Even if you are under 16, don’t worry, we still have to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Sometimes there are situations where a project worker or a doctor may feel it necessary to pass on your information. This would happen if they were worried that you, or someone else, might be at risk of harm or injury, or in some kind of danger. Even then, they would not talk to anyone without speaking to you first and explaining this.

If you are still worried about this, please still get in touch and we can explain whether we can keep your situation confidential or not.

What happens to information that I give you?

If you read our information about confidentiality you will find out that we cannot share your information or personal details without your consent.

If you come in to speak to one of our project workers for advice then your details are kept private. If you are receiving help from us, we request that you sign a Data Protection Consent Form.

This is just to say that if we give your personal details to other agencies to assist you, that we have done this with your permission. It is also so that we have your permission to hold your details on our files here at The SPACE.

Only project workers have access to your files, and they are always kept safely locked away.

What if I don’t speak English?

If you are not confident with speaking in English to our workers, we have access to a service known as Language Line. It is a telephone translation service which gives us access to speakers of all commonly spoken languages in England.

What do I do if I want to make a complaint?

If you have used our services, we want to know what you think about it. We have a comments and suggestion box in our reception, and we always welcome ideas and feedback from young people in Derby.

We also want to know if there is something that you are not happy about from your visit so that we can change this in the future and improve our services.

You can visit us or phone up and talk to our Project Co-ordinator, Jean Ramsden who is on hand to listen to your concerns.

If you would like to speak to someone else, Christine is the Complaint Manager at Children and Young People’s Services and she would be happy to talk to you. You can contact Christine on 01332 711233. You can also pick up a form from The SPACE and post a note to Christine.

If you would prefer to speak to someone independent: VOYCE (Volunteers Offering Young People Choices and Encouragment) has advocates independent from the Council and can advise you as to what you can do and will speak on your behalf. They can be contacted on 0800 0286977.
