There are approximately 45 km of known public footpaths and bridleways in the city. Nearly all of them were once rural paths but many are now completely within the built up area. A few are still within the rural fringe of the city. These rights of way are important because they allow people to travel around the city for work or pleasure, without the need for cars. Derby City Council has produced a number of walks and nature trail leaflets.
The Council has a number of statutory duties related to public rights of way.
We must keep them
-
-
open at all times for public use
-
maintained to a level suitable for their use
-
signed wherever they leave a road.
We must also process requests for new public paths, as well as requests for the diversion and/or closure of existing ones.
