Vision and Objectives

Derby City Council are committed to developing and maintaining an integrated transport network which promotes safety and sustainability and contributes to creating a better quality of life for people living in, working in or visiting the area.

To achieve this, the Long Term Transport Strategy, as set out in the Derby Joint Local Transport Plan 2006-2011, focuses on six main elements. These are:

  1. Land Use Policies—focus on putting developments in the right places
  2. Smarter Choices—support and promote measures to encourage people to make more sustainable and “smarter” transport choices.
  3. Local Safety and Accessibility Improvements—seeking to ensure bus services provide access to centres, and that walking routes to bus stops are improved.
  4. Strategic Public Transport Improvements—to concentrate on improving bus services and routes into the city centre by including effective bus priorities, new park & ride sites and segregated bus routes.
  5. Strategic Traffic Management and Demand Restraint—continue to make the best use of the existing road network, for example, by better managing road works, addressing congestion hotspots and introducing decriminalised parking enforcement.
  6. Maintenance of Transport Infrastructure—to manage necessary maintenance work to minimise disruption to users on the network.

All these elements are described in full in the Derby Joint Local Transport Plan (2006 - 2011) which is available on this website.
