Derby. A city for all ages

Connecting Normanton

Connecting Normanton will provide the infrastructure to enable better access to services in the Normanton area and into the city centre. The aim of the project is to improve facilities for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians giving better choice and the opportunity to reduce car use in Normanton and provide environmental benefits to the local community. The Connecting Normanton project is part of the wider Connecting Derby transport project.

Some of the benefits that the Connecting Normanton project will enable are:

  • A new city-bound bus lane on Normanton Road from Charnwood Street to allow buses easier access from the Normanton area into the city centre. The bus route will a new bus stop with accessible raised kerbs
  • A new city-bound bus lane on Burton Road from Mount Street with associated improvements
  • New crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists which will improve access around the local area and into the city centre
  • Removal of through traffic from the current inner ring road on unsuitable residential streets to the new completed inner ring road. This will allow the closure of Leopold Street and Charnwood Street to unnecessary through traffic and access will be for the people that live and work there and for essential services. Through traffic will also be taken away from Mount Street and Mill Hill Lane and new traffic arrangements will provide environmental benefits for the people in this area
  • The closure of Leopold Street and Charnwood Street to through traffic will allow for the potential regeneration of this area. Connecting Normanton is an integrated transport project and we have been working with the Rosehill Housing Market Renewal project who are planning the refurbishment of Leopold Street and Melbourne Street. They have already successfully finished work to improve Hartington Street and are developing plans with local residents for other nearby streets. This will be consistent with the transport plans for Connecting Normanton.
