Improvement works to Friar Gate, Cheapside and Wardwick

We have started the improvements works to Friar Gate, Wardwick and Cheapside on 12th July 2010.

The rekerbing and repaving works started on 12 July at the Wardwick, from the Curzon St junction to the Job Centre, and on Friar Gate from Norman House up to Cheapside.

The carriageway works started on 19 July at the Wardwick starting at the Job Centre end.

Works to Cheapside will commence 9 August 2010.

Stage 5 is likely to be completed by April 2011.

Becket Street has been closed at its junction with Wardwick for the duration of the works to facilitate the construction work.

During the works some parking will be affected in Friar Gate but it is the aim to maintain as much parking as possible in order to reduce any possible impact on local businesses.

During the footway works pedestrians will be diverted onto the road between fencing and barriers. Access to all properties will be maintained and signed and where shop doors are affected work will be done outside of opening hours i.e. overnight or on Sundays.

Lara Croft Way is to partially open

A new road named after video game heroine Lara Croft will partially open in Derby next week.

Drivers will be able to use a stretch of Lara Croft Way, part of the city's inner ring road, from Tuesday.

The road has been built under Derby City Council's Connecting Derby ring road project, which began in 2001.

It was named after the Tomb Raider star when nearly 28,000 votes were cast in its favour in a poll.

The existing route to Osmaston Road roundabout, from Burton Road and Green Lane via Leopold Street, will be unavailable to use from the same day.

King Street Link Opens

The new King Street link, which is called Quaker Way, will partially open on Tuesday 13 April. It creates an outbound corridor for all vehicles between St Helen's Street and Lodge Lane, and will improve the flow of both inbound and outbound traffic in the King Street area.

Improvement works to start on Wardwick, Cheapside and Friar Gate

The improvements in Friar Gate, Cheapside and Wardwick are a continuation of the work carried out in the city centre in 2003/2004 as part of Connecting Derby Phase 1.

This new phase will include pavement and junction improvements and changes to traffic management in the Friar Gate, Cheapside and Wardwick areas.

Natural Yorkstone paving is to be laid to new levels to improve footway drainage and footways will be widened on the south side of the Wardwick between Becket Street and Curzon Street.

The Wardwick carriageway will be narrowed outside the library to reduce the crossing width and additional pedestrian crossings will be provided across Wardwick, Curzon Street., Cheapside and Friar Gate all under traffic signal control.

In order to reduce through traffic in roads such as Becket Street, Curzon Street and Friar Gate between Ford Street and Cheapside the following measures will be implemented:

A new bus, taxi and cycle only route will be provided between Bridge Street and Cheapside toward the city centre.

Becket Street's junction with Wardwick will be closed and its use restricted to cyclists only.

Only buses will be allowed to travel from Curzon Street into Cheapside. All other vehicles must turn left from Curzon Street into Friar Gate.

Only buses will be allowed to travel from Wardwick into Friar Gate. All other vehicles must turn right from Wardwick into Cheapside.

The works are scheduled to start in late May 2010 and are anticipated to continue until March 2011; there will be an eight week break in the works during the during the working restricted period from November 2010 to January 2011.

Important Traffic News - 25th January

We have started road widening works from Uttoxeter New Road opposite the Drewry Court, along Stafford Street, and on St Alkmund’s Way from Cathedral Road (the Joseph Wright Centre) along Ford Street.

Traffic Management such as narrowing the road and closing lanes on St Alkmund's Way (from Cathedral Road), Stafford Street, Friar Gate and Uttoxeter New Road will be in place during different phases of works until the road widening is completed in around 6 months time.

We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Important Traffic News - 20th January

In December last year, we closed Green Lane and Babington Lane at their junction with Burton Road for two nights, to resurface the roads.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete the work because the road surfacing vehicle started to sink in to the ground (at every attempt to lay tarmac) at the top of Green Lane.

We've carried out an investigation of the existing road, and concluded that this section of road needs complete reconstruction due to the extremely poor condition of the existing tarmac.

We therefore need to close Green Lane at its junction with Burton Road on Monday (1 February). The work will take at least two weeks to complete, and diversions will be in place.

We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.
