What the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964 covers

Dealing in scrap metal or running a scrap metal business is controlled by the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964.

A scrap metal dealer classed as carrying on a business in the local authority area if any of the following apply …

  • The dealer occupies a place as a scrap metal store in the area.
  • The dealer does not occupy a place as a scrap metal store but has a usual place of residence in the area.
  • The dealer does not occupy a place as a scrap metal store but occupies a place for business purposes.

You do not need a licence but you do need to register as a Scrap Metal Dealer with us.  Registration is free and lasts for three years.

How do I register to become a Scrap Metal Dealer?

Applicants must be over 18 years of age.

You can download the forms and either complete by hand or on a computer.

  • You must complete the Scrap metal dealers new application form .
  • Your registration will appear in the Public Register, which is a document that contains all existing scrap metal dealer registrations.

You must renew your registration on or before the expiry date if you want to carry on as a scrap metal dealer.
