Voices in Action is a Youth council for young people aged 11 to 19 years old representing their school, support group or youth project.
The Youth and Deputy Mayor chair the youth council meetings and represent all children and young people in Derby. They are a vital part of the youth council, they help make beneficial decisions and create new ideas.
Each year, Voices in Action Youth Council identifies one issue that is of particular significance to young people in the city, such as mental health, homelessness and new communities. This issue is then looked at in detail and at the end of the year the findings and recommendations for improvement and change are presented to senior decision makers.
I joined ViA two years ago and it has opened up a lot of opportunities for me so of which I wouldn't have been able to do if I wasn't part of it. In these meetings you get to discuss issues and topics that are important to young people in Derby. For the past two years, I've met some amazing people and learnt a lot about myself so in a way Voices in Action helps some individuals find themselves.
Joining in discussions and presenting my perspective regarding topics of interest has allowed me to make a significant contribution to the youth of Derby.
