Registering your Marriage

Registering your intention to marry

Before you can get married at the Council House, you must both give notice of your intention to marry.

You cannot give notice of marriage more than 12 months before the date you have chosen for your wedding. A notice of marriage must be given by each of you in person, in the district where you live. A standard fee is charged for this service.

When you register your marriage, you will need to show evidence of your name, age and nationality - ideally in the form of a passport.

If you have been married or registered in a civil partnership before, you will also need to produce documents that confirm you are now free to marry - these could include a divorce decree absolute, a final order of civil partnership dissolution or the death certificate of your former husband, wife or civil partner.

If you are a Derby resident and require more information on registering your intention to marry, you will need to make an appointment with the Register Office.

Booking a Registrar

To host a wedding ceremony at the Council House, you will need to book a registrar.

The Superintendent Registrar for Derby is based at the Register Office and can be contacted on 01332 255434.

Arranging Witnesses

You must ask two people to witness your marriage. They can be friends or relatives, and must be over the age of sixteen and able to understand the ceremony.

The witnesses usually sit either side of the bride and groom during the ceremony. They are asked to sign the marriage register and their names will appear on the marriage certificate.

Added Extras

Can your guests throw confetti?

Confetti is a traditional part of any wedding. We are happy for your guests to throw confetti, but it we would politely ask that guests wait until the bride and groom are outside the ceremonial entrance of the Council House before doing so.

Are photography and videos allowed?

Your guests are very welcome to bring cameras to record your special occasion. Photography and videos are allowed in the Civic Suite at the discretion of the couple.
