Species Details

Monk’s Rhubarb is a rare established perennial of grassy places by roads streams and habitations. Recent records are virtually confined to the northern part of the Peak Fringe (Holmesfield SK3277, Ashover SK3563 & Highoredish SK3559) though previous records covered a wider area including the White Peak (Kirk Dale SK1868 & Slaley SK2757). It was once grown in gardens and most sightings are probably relics of former cultivation. Its loss from the White Peak is then most likely due to the gentrification of country cottages. It is a native of mountains in central and southern Europe.
