Demolition - control and advice

What should I do if I wish to demolish all or part of a building?

If you wish to demolish a building or part of a building, you must send us a Notice at least six weeks before you intend to start. This is known as a 'Section 80 Notice'. Download a Section 80 - Notice of Intended Demolition form

You must also send a copy of the Notice to the occupier of any neighbouring building and to the gas and electricity providers.

Important

You must not start any demolition:

  • until six weeks after you have sent us your Notice, or
  • until you have received our notice, known as a 'Section 81 Notice'.

When we send you our Notice, we will impose conditions that you must stick to. These conditions are to protect public safety and make sure the site of the demolition is left in an acceptable state.

You may also need planning permission for the demolition. If you do, you must not start demolition until you have received permission, even if you have already received our Section 81 Notice.
