Step by step guide to butterfly gardening with Floyd the Frog
1 Hi. I'm Floyd the Frog and I like butterflies. So, I'll show you how to make a butterfly garden. |
2 Find a little sheltered corner in your own garden, which you can allow to go 'wild', to create an area for butterflies. If you haven't got a garden, ask a friend who has. |
3 Dig over, removing any plants and roots and rake it to prepare a good surface. |
4 Choose a variety of plants in the spring. Buddleia, known as the 'butterfly bush' attracts many butterflies. |
5 A good variety of sizes and colours will provide you with a wider range of colourful butterflies, that may visit your garden between March and October. |
6 Butterflies feed on the nectar of these plants, while caterpillars feed on the leaves. |
7 Caterpillars shed their skins several times and form a chrysalis within a few weeks. |
8 The chrysalis within its fragile skin will gradually emerge as a butterfly and so the life cycle begins again. |
Aftercare
- Regularly hoe around the base of the plants to remove any couch grass or other weeds.
- When the flowers are over, remove the dead flower heads.
- Do not use any insecticides or herbicides.
