Home adaptations are provided for people with a physical or sensory disability to help them to live independently in their own homes.

What is an adaptation?
An adaptation is work that is necessary to allow people to get into and around the home.
Examples of adaptations are:
- Rails to door ways and stairs
- Half steps
- Ramps
- Widening of doorways
- Leveling of threshold strips
- Stair lifts
- Replacement of bath with showers
- Access to bedroom and/or bathroom
- Chair or bed raisers.
Who is eligible for adaptations?
The work can be provided following the assessment of people who meet the eligibility criteria (Fair Access to Care Services). Requests for an assessment can be by the person having difficulty getting around their home, or anyone else on their behalf (for example a relative, a friend, a neighbour or other agency like a hospital or age concern).
Who will pay for the work?
If you live in your own property or privately rented property, you will not have to pay for grab rails, stair rails, chair raisers or other low cost items. All work that costs over £1000, for example a stair lift, will be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant. This Grant is means tested.
If you live in property belonging to Derby Homes or a Housing Association, the Social Services worker will write to the landlord and ask them to provide the items that have been assessed.
