Welcome to Derby's Integrating Children and Young People's Services web site. Derby is working to integrate services for children and young people in order to implement the Children Act 2004. This web site is intended to provide information about Derby's progress.

Following the inquiry into the tragic death of Victoria Climbie, the government has set a new agenda for children and young people; the Every Child Matters - Change for Children Agenda. This agenda is supported by new legislation - the Children Act 2004.

The government requires that all local Councils that have legal responsibilities for children's services, such as Derby, develop arrangements with local partners to improve children and young people's lives. These arrangements are often referred to as children's trusts arrangements. In Derby, a local partnership called the Derby Children and Young People's Partnership is working to put these arrangements in place. The logo on this page, which was developed by young people, represents this partnership.

The Children Act 2004 requires that the Partnerships places improving outcomes for children and young people; improving their lives, at the heart of everything it does. Children and young people were asked in a national consultation about what they wanted for their childhood.  They came up with five key outcomes:

  • Be Healthy
  • Stay Safe
  • Enjoying and Achieving
  • Making a Positive Contribution
  • Achieving Economic Wellbeing

To deliver improved outcomes for children and young people the Children Act requires that partnerships work to:

  • Bring services together and integrate them
  • Develop policies for information sharing and single assessment
  • Establish a partnership plan for Children and Young People
  • Agree a formal arrangements for decision making; responsibility and accountability.

As well as this web site we also publish a newsletter that is circulated via the City for Children and Young People to staff working across the city who work with children and young people and their families. You can download previous issues of the newsletter from the links below:

Safeguarding Children Procedures

The Children and Young People’s Services departmental business plan establishes the responsibility of the department, concentrating on key areas of change to deliver corporate priorities and key outcomes and to communicate how we as a department support the Council’s priorities and key outcomes, setting out what we plan to deliver and how the improvements are going to be made.

In producing the business plan we have followed the Council’s performance management framework and have sought contributions from employees in the planning and development of this plan. By doing so we hope to have produced a plan for the year ahead that is realistic and robust and one which will be a useful working guide for all employees to follow and monitor their performance and actions against. This business plan should be read in conjunction with the Children and Young People’s Plan. Together, these plans provide the over-arching strategic Children and Young People’s Services departmental plan for the forthcoming year.
