What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are paid jobs which allow you to earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain skills and experience.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the level of Apprenticeship, your ability and the industry sector.

The minimum salary is £2.60 per hour; however, many apprentices earn significantly more.

Research shows that people who do Apprenticeships earn, on average, over £100,000 more throughout their lifetime than other employees.

Your career doesn't have to stop at the Advanced Apprenticeship - if you want to go on to Higher Education, many universities will offer you a place on a Foundation Degree or other higher level qualifications.

Who can apply for an Apprenticeship?

Anyone over 16 years old, living in England and not in full-time education can apply, whether you’re a school leaver or have been working for years and want a new career.

Some industries have specific entry requirements; we recommend you check before applying.

What types of Apprenticeships are available?

There are over 100,000 employers offering Apprenticeships in more than 160,000 locations; there are more than 200 different types of Apprenticeships available offering over 1,200 job roles.

There are three levels of Apprenticeship available for those aged 16 and over…

  1. Intermediate Level Apprenticeships

    Equivalent to five good GCSEs. Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as a Level 2 Competence Qualification, Functional Skills and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification.

  2. Advanced Level Apprenticeships

    Equivalent to two A-Level passes. Apprentices work towards work-based learning such as a Level 3 Competence Qualification, Functional Skills and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge based qualification.

  3. Higher Apprenticeships

    Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as a Level 4 Competence Qualification, Functional Skills and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation Degree.
