Employment and training initiatives

Employment and Skills Board

The Employment and Skills Board co-ordinates activity around employment and skills development in the city.  Through this group we commissioned a report called Demand for Skills 2009 – 2023. This report identified the skills required by employers in Derby when recruiting staff in the future.

We have introduced a web based tool called Huddle. This will help organisations communicate better when they have new vacancies or new initiatives to help people into work.

The group has carried out research into the problems people face when trying to get jobs. The results of this research are now being used to improve current, and plan new services.

Making Derby Work

The Making Derby Work project is funded by the East Midlands Development Agency. The project has:

  • supported 200 people to find work
  • developed a DVD aimed at young people to help them understand the world of work
  • produced a report which makes sure that available training meets the needs of employers.

We are using our planning policy to make sure that any new developments in Derby are assessed for the potential jobs they will create and that those jobs are targeted at our local communities.
