Learning in libraries

What learning do you offer at Derby City Libraries?

We offer a number of free courses and activities to support you.

Job clubs

We support jobseekers at three library job clubs:

  • Central Library Job Club every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Sinfin Library Job Club every Tuesday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 10.00am to 12 noon
  • From 7th December 2012, Alvaston Library Job Club every Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 10.00am to 12 noon.

The clubs are organised by Libraries and the sessions are delivered by volunteers and experts from advice agencies.

All sessions are drop in and you can stay for as long or short a time as you like. Everyone is welcome and tea and coffee are available as well.

Internet taster courses

We run free Internet taster courses for anyone who is new to using the Internet. These courses are for two sessions and give the learner a good understanding of how the Internet can benefit them.

Creative writing

We host regular creative writing workshops with well known authors on areas such as self publishing, writing a novel, writing for children and poetry workshops.

Are there any online courses available?

Use Theory Test Pro to practice the Driving Theory Test in the library or from home. You will need your library card number. You can join online if you aren't a member.

The Life in Great Britain course guides you through what you need to know to pass the citizenship test, with example questions at each stage. You can then test your knowledge about citizenship by having a go at the full practice test. You will need your library card number and you will need to create a login and password to access the course each time. You can join online if you aren't a member.

What can I use the Library computers for?

The Library computers are free to use.

You can use the Internet to look up information, email or search for jobs.

You may want to just write up your CV or letter or try an online course.

What other learning resources are there?

We have books available in a variety of subjects that may support your learning, from gardening and DIY to computing and languages.

You may want to brush up on your literacy skills. Try our No Late Fee collection of books to help improve your reading.

How can I find out about learning events in libraries?
