View some of our works by renowned artist Joseph Wright.
An Orrery is an early form of planetarium. Travelling lectures were organized up and down the country to explain the latest scientific developments and it is likely that Joseph Wright attended one in Derby.
Before modern science developed, alchemists combined knowledge, magic and religion in a search for the philosopher's stone that could turn ordinary metal into gold.
This was painted in time for Wright's one-man show in the spring of 1785.
Wright painted a series of five blacksmith and iron forge paintings between 1771 and 1773.
We do not know what year Wright painted this picture but we do know that it was exhibited with the Society of Artists in 1769.
